Anne Frank moved from Germany to Holland when the Nazi persecution stared to get bad. In Holland she had a normal Dutch girl life until the Nazis took over Holland. When the Nazis enforced the anti-Jewish laws she had to switch schools and go to a Jewish school. Her father started preparing a hiding place for the family because he saw the way things were going. On July 5th 1942 Anne’s sister Margot was summoned to report for deportation by the Germans. The next morning the Franks went to their hiding place (also known as the “Secret Annex.”) The “Secret Annex” was located at the top of a warehouse office building. They shared the “Secret Annex” with Anne’s dads business associate, Mr. Van Daan, his wife Mrs. Van Dann and their 15 year old son Peter. They later decided they had enough room for one more person and invited Albert Dussel.

They all had to live together for 2 long years and at first everyone was getting along great but after a while of constantly seeing each other everyone was getting on each other’s nerves. Thursday, 16 September, 1943 Anne describes just how bad it got. “At mealtimes, no one dares to open their mouths (except to allow a mouthful of food to slip in) because whatever is said you either annoy someone or it is misunderstood” (109).

It was also extremely boring for them. They could only move around at night when all the workers left and while the workers were there they couldn’t make any noise. To keep herself occupied Anne would read lots of books. She studied many different languages. For something to do she would list off French verbs.
“Ordinary people simply don’t know what books mean to us, shut up here. Reading, learning and the radio are our amusements.” (85).

Anne wrote in her diary about everything that happened in the “Secret Annex.” She wrote about the fights she and the others had with each other. She wrote about the news and politics at the time. She described what life was like in the “Secret Annex.” She wrote about herself and how she had grown in maturity since her arrival and how lucky she considers herself to be. She also wrote about how she wants to be a writer but isn’t sure anyone would like her stories.

As if Anne hadn’t been through enough, Anne’s mother died without her knowing. Mr. Van Daan was seen being taken off to be gassed. Mr. Dussel was taken to Germany where he died. Peter van Daan was taken on a march to the west and was never heard from again. Anne, her sister and Mrs. Van Daan were taken to the Belsen concentration camp. Mrs. Van Daan and Anne’s sister died at the Belsen concentration camp. Soon after so did Anne.
